Prickly Friends

I've almost gone to Petsmart at least a dozen times, but I just KNOW that I would leave with a furry new friend, so I've resisted. Getting a pet before a couch and dining table is just silly, so my pet yearnings are on the back burner for now. As a sort of compromise, I purchased 3 baby cacti! Not only is this the start of a new hobby, but they also fit right in with my southwest décor scheme. These pictures are from the day I brought them home in their original plastic pots. 

The tall guy is commonly known as a "Baseball Bat" cactus. They are native to Bolivia and can grow up to 20 feet tall!! The round one is a Golden Barrel from Mexico and could get up to 3 feet. "Hibotan" or "Moon Cactus" is the name of the colorful one. She could potentially grow to be 5 feet tall. Right now, they are all under 12 inches. (phew!)

I never had much interest in raising plants, but now I have a little outdoor space and there's just something about the desert landscape that I love. If you have any tips about growing cacti, let me know :-)

I've moved to the desert! Yep, I left the big apple and headed west. My time in NYC was uh-mazing and most of my dearest friends are there, but I was starting to get restless. I knew that I didn't want to live there forever, so it was time to make a move.

The stars aligned and as I made this big decision, a boy came (back) into my life. My college sweetheart swept me off my feet again and when he got a job in Tucson, AZ I went with him.

So here I am, starting a new chapter in the desert. First order of business: decorate the apartment southwest style :-)

Listomania

I love making lists and I've been making a ton of them lately as I prepare for a 6 week trip south of the equator. These check-lists are helping me to accomplish a number of small tasks like "buy hiking socks" and "print boarding pass." When every item is checked off, I should end up at JFK with a full backpack ready for South America.

When I return to reality a month and a half later, I need to begin a new list. One that will get me to whatever it is I'm supposed to be doing with my life. Still haven't quite nailed that one down...

Today someone told me I was brave for quitting my job and living. Then she reassured me that everything is going to be okay because things work out when you're brave.

With that wonderful well-wish, I'll sign off for the night. Bon Weekend!

If these photos make sense, you must have letterpress experience!

On Monday I printed a handful of holiday cards using this 15th century technique. As if you need further proof of my nerdery, I'll admit it's been a desire of mine to create stationery with a letterpress. In the age of MacBooks, what a time travel trip it is to carefully choose metal letters (is that a p or a q?!), set them and operate heavy machinery in order to compose a story or saying.

The photos clockwise from top left: my words on the press; an assortment of type sizes; my holiday saying set to go (do you know what it says?!) and Bodoni font uppercase letters.

Lemon Chicken

This Thanksgiving I spent a leisurely week in sunny Arizona. 

Family, family, family, which means food and art. Not football or fights, but photography, fonts, paintings, film, dance, fashion. I always knew I came from a creative clan, but there was just something about this holiday in particular…

Exhibit A: MY BRAND NEW LOGO! 

What do you think?? My graphic designer dad and I spent an evening culling through fonts and photos until we created the perfect design. I took the photo during my recent trip to Niagara Falls and gave it the vintage filter using Picnik. The font is called "Lemon Chicken." It reminds me of The New Yorker mag, not an item from a take-out menu, but either way I love its art deco feel!

p.s. The Arizona sky offered up these beautiful photo moments that I was able to capture in between grandma's meals and catching up with the fam.

Picking apples for a day

My friends and I escaped the city on a Saturday to partake in a quintessential fall outing: apple picking!

We passed the surprisingly hot and sunny afternoon tree climbing, taste testing and quite literally losing ourselves in the orchard ("I could have sworn we parked next to these red delicious trees!?") 

That evening, we triumphantly returned to our concrete jungle with enough yummy, crisp apples to see us through until November...

A North Fork wine tasting excursion on an autumn day. It was overcast and a little chilly, so I felt like drinking reds. My favorite at both wineries was the Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabs are described as having hints of chocolate and coffee. Hmmm that might explain why I took such a liking...

Man Sweaters

Confession: my coziest sweater is from the men's department. Hands down, guy sweaters are always the comfiest and most inviting to wear when the weather gets chillier. Some of the best in my collection were graciously "donated" by old sweethearts...

I'd wear these two pieces from Jack Spade with skinny jeans, lace-up oxfords and aviators as an homage to the beautiful fall light.

Gold Dust Woman

These images are from the brittle paper packages of vintage sewing patterns. There are tons available for sale on Etsy, most under $10! Clearly it would behoove me to become a master with the needle- both crocheting and sewing. The above crocheted beauties channel a little bit of 1970s folk rock band, right??

Kudos to everyone who just understood the blog title.

This headpiece is just groovy. Confession: I don't like it paired with the necklace, but on its own would be a fabulous way to add some edge to a wedding or any fancy outfit.

I've fancied this umbrella since the first time I went into the dressing rooms of Kate Spade, 5th Ave. In proper Kate spirit, they are playfully decorated with zebra print wallpaper by Scalamandré. A short google image search later and I happened upon a photo of this rainy day accessory. I couldn't believe it, but almost a year passed and I had yet to see one on the streets of NYC. Finally, just a few days ago it happened! I emerged from the subway on the Upper East Side and while struggling to open my it's-going-to-break-anyday drugstore umbrella, I look up and there it is, being carried along Lexington by a tiny, 60-something lady.

What a smile-provoking way to add color and whimsy to an overcast day...
