Prickly Friends

I've almost gone to Petsmart at least a dozen times, but I just KNOW that I would leave with a furry new friend, so I've resisted. Getting a pet before a couch and dining table is just silly, so my pet yearnings are on the back burner for now. As a sort of compromise, I purchased 3 baby cacti! Not only is this the start of a new hobby, but they also fit right in with my southwest décor scheme. These pictures are from the day I brought them home in their original plastic pots. 

The tall guy is commonly known as a "Baseball Bat" cactus. They are native to Bolivia and can grow up to 20 feet tall!! The round one is a Golden Barrel from Mexico and could get up to 3 feet. "Hibotan" or "Moon Cactus" is the name of the colorful one. She could potentially grow to be 5 feet tall. Right now, they are all under 12 inches. (phew!)

I never had much interest in raising plants, but now I have a little outdoor space and there's just something about the desert landscape that I love. If you have any tips about growing cacti, let me know :-)

Lemon Chicken

This Thanksgiving I spent a leisurely week in sunny Arizona. 

Family, family, family, which means food and art. Not football or fights, but photography, fonts, paintings, film, dance, fashion. I always knew I came from a creative clan, but there was just something about this holiday in particular…

Exhibit A: MY BRAND NEW LOGO! 

What do you think?? My graphic designer dad and I spent an evening culling through fonts and photos until we created the perfect design. I took the photo during my recent trip to Niagara Falls and gave it the vintage filter using Picnik. The font is called "Lemon Chicken." It reminds me of The New Yorker mag, not an item from a take-out menu, but either way I love its art deco feel!

p.s. The Arizona sky offered up these beautiful photo moments that I was able to capture in between grandma's meals and catching up with the fam.

Picking apples for a day

My friends and I escaped the city on a Saturday to partake in a quintessential fall outing: apple picking!

We passed the surprisingly hot and sunny afternoon tree climbing, taste testing and quite literally losing ourselves in the orchard ("I could have sworn we parked next to these red delicious trees!?") 

That evening, we triumphantly returned to our concrete jungle with enough yummy, crisp apples to see us through until November...

A North Fork wine tasting excursion on an autumn day. It was overcast and a little chilly, so I felt like drinking reds. My favorite at both wineries was the Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabs are described as having hints of chocolate and coffee. Hmmm that might explain why I took such a liking...

A Capitol Autumn

Happy November, everyone!

I was lucky enough to be in Washington, D.C. this past weekend for the Rally to Restore Sanity. I just couldn't help but post this photo that I took afterwards from a little bit east of the Lincoln Memorial. Isn't our capitol pretty? Hope you had a festive Halloween!
